Young Writers Shake on the Block

Free Summer Shakespeare Workshop

June-August 2016

The Poets Corner is a free monthly workshop for teens and young adults, at the Brooklyn Public Library: Williamsburg Branch, meant to empower students in writing creatively with different styles of poetry and structure, while nurturing a space for them to use as an outlet for documenting their own stories and emotions. Each student creates unique pieces at every class and is encouraged to participate in an open mic section to share their work.
YOUNG WRITERS: SHAKE ON THE BLOCK. This free seven-week workshop will help young writers shed the fear of Shakespeare and discover the magic, fun and some would say craziness of the immortal bard through playwriting, adaptation and performance. Students will work on breaking down Shakespeare’s array of exciting, complex plots and characters in HAMLET & KING LEAR, which they will then adapt for performance by adding street slang and modern English. Students will be introduced to the rudiments of the theater process and develop skills in acting, memorization, adaptation, staging and performance while using their imagination to create cool, dynamic new characters based on Shakespeare’s plays.
