SHAKESPEARE FOR FREE!
To be or not to be! Under the guidance of teacher Modesto "Flako" Jimenez, the 2016 Shake on The Block students transformed the classic Shakespearean tragedy of Hamlet into a modern-day soap opera romance in which Hamlet and Ophelia flee Denmark to the magical land of Williamsburg. While staying true to the original story, these teens added a Brooklyn twist to one of theatre's most legendary ghost tales.
"I have been doing Shakespeare since I was a nine-year-old kid in Bushwick... Brooklyn Gypsies is dedicated to making sure kids in our neighborhoods have access to quality arts education. Everyone deserves an opportunity to enjoy Shakespeare's brilliant plays... "

"I recommended [Shake On The Block] to my daughter Maya who will be attending Lehman College for Musical Theater. To hear her express excitement and appreciation for Flako's honesty and professionalism was great. I didn't expect anything less... She also stated that he was fun while still teaching them and allowing them to be part of the creative aspect of the program."
